How Much Can I Expect to Make as a Gynecologist?
Gynecologists are primary care doctors who specialize in treating reproductive conditions, illnesses, and disorders. These doctors help patients by teaching them about their own bodies, performing STD tests, pap smears, and breast scans, and monitoring the patient’s menstrual cycle for any abnormalities. Oftentimes, gynecology is also coupled with obstetrics, a practice that oversees the birthing process, and ensures the safety of both the mother and the child. But while gynecology is a rewarding career in and of itself, how much can you expect to make?
How Much Can Gynecologists Earn?
Healthcaresalariesguide.com estimates that all gynecologists working in the US earn an average salary of around $204,000 a year. However, your salary may vary depending on a variety of factors. These factors include the number of hours you work per week, the amount of experience you have, and the location of your practice.
The Number of Hours
Neither gynecologists nor OB/GYNs necessarily have a “normal work day,” mostly because of the unpredictability of their patients. You don’t know when it will be time to perform a delivery, or if there will be any unexpected complications with the mother. There are also times when a patient may cancel their appointment because of an emergency. However, many OB/GYNs tend to work 40-60 hours a week, though some work only 4 days per week. If you are self-employed, you could work anywhere between 50-70 hours a week. The more hours you work however, the more money you earn.
The Years of Experience
When you graduate from medical school and enter a residency program that focuses on gynecology, you won’t be paid as much as the other doctors, simply because you haven’t had enough experience. In a sense, you’re a doctor-in-training. As such, the average salaries for OB/GYN residencies tend to hover at around $55,000.
Even after you graduate, you will still have to work hard in order to catch up to your colleagues. However, the average starting salary of gynecologists and OB/GYNs can fall anywhere between $150,000 to $165,000 annually. After working for approximately 5 to 10 years, you can expect to make around $204,000 a year in the United States.
The Location of Your Practice
There’s no doubt that where you practice affects your salary. This could be due to having access to other healthcare facilities, the number of competitors in the area, and the type of insurance your potential patients have.
For example, if you work in a rural setting, you’ll earn less than those who work in urban settings. This difference can also be seen across several states; if you work in California, your average income will be approximately $201,790. On the other hand, if you decide to work in Texas, you will make an average of around $207,750. This difference, however, is most prominent between countries. Again, if you work in the United States, you will have an average salary of $204,000. If you work in New Zealand though, you will earn around $124,714.
As a gynecologist, you get to treat patients’ illnesses and conditions. And if you have a passion for it, you’ll have the chance to earn money by doing what you love. However, keep in mind that salaries depend on other factors, such as the hours worked, the years of experience, and the location you work at.
