Most male fashion communities go by the adage that “clothes make the man.” But then again, one could argue that looks, personality, respect, intelligence, or one of the other myriad of qualities people are expected to possess “make” the man. At the end of the day, being presentable is important.

Whether it’s making your first impression on the future in-laws or landing the next big client, how you look plays a large role in how you are perceived and gives people an impression of the type of person you are before you even open your mouth. For the uninitiated, you’ll slowly learn that there’s a lot more to looking presentable than you’d initially think.

Facial Hair

If looking like Hagrid is your thing, by all means, go ahead. But it goes without saying that most women prefer a little less bush on the jawline. However, that’s not to say the Agent 47 look is suitable for everyone either. Beards, when cut and shaped right, can actually improve your look and sculpt your face. You most likely know this, along with nose and ear hairs that need trimming every now and then. One thing you likely haven’t considered though, is eyebrows. No, you’re not expected to shave them off and draw them back on with crayons but plucking the nasty strays and brushing them up goes a long way in making you look like you take care of yourself.

A Hairstyle That Actually Suits You

Choose a hairstyle that gels well with the shape of your head. There are plenty of infographics and visual guides out there that can help you with this. It would also be advised to refrain from overly harmful procedures such as bleaching as they tend to limit what you can do in the future. Most guys would benefit from playing it safe and going with something timeless, such as an undercut.

It shows when you take care of your hair, too. Don’t wash it too often or you’ll shed like a cat. Don’t leave it for too long either, as visibly oily hair is a no-go. Get the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. Choose clay or “muck” based styling products instead of the now outdated gels and sprays that do awful things to your hair.

How You Smell

If you’re out of high school and you’re still relying on your chocolate flavored deodorant to get you by, it’s time for a change. Head to your local specialist store and try on a few colognes. The smell will vary per person as they react to your skin. Find one that works and take it home (after paying.)

Swap your scented deo for a brand that eliminates odor without adding one of its own and let your cologne speak for itself.

For more info, head over to Dude Pins and check out their guides on self-improvement. These three steps are only the tip of the iceberg.

From clothes to skin to the way you speak, there are still tons of ways you can improve your image. But once you get it right, you’ll be a much happier and more confident man.
