I have always considered myself someone who far prefers living in the country than in a city, but I have recently moved to New York for 6 months for my job. I haven’t been here very long and prior to heading here, I wanted to know what living here was really like. i have a good friend Alpman Ilker who has lived here all of his adult life, and he loves it here. I asked Alpman to run through his 5 top reasons as to why he loves it here, and this is what he had to say.

The Buzz

The first thing that he noted was how much he loved the buzz of the city. He told me that there is always something going on, day and night, week after week, and the city really doesn’t sleep. Whilst for some this may be an off-putting feature of the city, for Alpman it is something which he adores, the busy city where everyone is always up to something.

Despite living here for more than a decade, my friend tells me that the iconic status of New York never really rubs off. He  tells me that whether he’s crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, walking past the Statue of Liberty or even jumping in a yellow cab, the iconic status of these attractions and points of interest are never lost on him.

My friend commutes for more than an hour each day to and from his job, and he tells me that he thinks this is one of the best cities in the world to do so. The public transport links in New York are super functional, quick and plentiful in the options that you have in front of you. Whether you are taking the underground, local bus links or using one of the many bicycle schemes which are dotted throughout the city, a commute to work is actually a pleasant experience here.

Big Shows

My friend is  huge fan of all entertainment from music, theater to cinema, and New York is the place to be if you love to be entertained. Given the status of New York, all of the biggest productions and artists come here, giving residents the chance to see some of the world’s finest showcase their skills.

New York is awash with opportunities which are there for you to grab if you so wish. Whether you are a marketeer, a financial professional, an actor or an entrepreneur, everything is in place for you to succeed in New York. It may not always be easy given the huge amount of competition which you will likely face, but my buddy tells me that if you are willing to put in the work and stay focussed, then this is a city which will allow everyone to achieve their dreams.
