Taking a gap year is something that helps thousands of students around the World to refresh and revitalize them before the time comes to start university or college. Not only does it give students the chance to rest themselves before starting the new year but it also gives them an opportunity to open their minds and eyes to the wider World, learn something about themselves and understand new and different cultures.

If you have decided to take a gap year then you have made a smart decision and you have an experience ahead of you which you are unlikely to forget for years to come. You will need to make sure that you are fully prepared for your gap year and here are a few things that you should be doing to get yourself ready.

First and Foremost

The first thing which you need to do is to inform your university of choice that you will be studying a year later. Ensure that nothing changes with any offers that you have received and that they will still be on the table when you get back.

Simply put, the more money that you have, the better the trip you will be able to enjoy and you need to start thinking about money quite some time before you head off on your travels. For months before your trip you will need to be focused on making as much money as you possibly can and aiming to save as much as possible as well. Being at a young age can be difficult when it comes to saving, everyone will want you to go out for drinks and parties and you will need to learn to say no. Try to think of the bigger picture when the time comes to refuse a night out.

What Kind of Gap Year

You need to start thinking about what kind of gap year you are after, will you be traveling for the whole year or will you instead decide to work or volunteer whilst you are away. If you plan to travel then you should be making some plans about when and how, check out any events that you would like to see on the road and plan your trip around them. If you opt to work or volunteer then you need to make sure that there is a place available for you in your chosen field of work, you could try to wing something whilst you are away but it’s far better to arrange this before you leave.

Although you may be going for a year, it is important that you resist the temptation to take everything you own with you, you need to try and pack light and sensible like necessary outdoor gear. It is likely that you will be carrying your bag around many places and the last thing that you want is to be weighed down. Don’t forget, other countries sell clothes too and you can always buy stuff on the road.
